CES 2006: Panasonic SC-HT940 and SC-RT50 home cinema systems
Home cinema systems pack in DVD recorders, proprietary HDMI tech
Panasonic is building on the success of last year’s CES showstormer – its wireless home cinema system – by adding two new models which come with an interesting (and proprietary) variation on HDMI.
The Panasonic SC-HT940 and SC-RT50 feature HDAVI Control, a gizmo that enables you to power up (and power down) everything from the home cinema system to your plasma display simply by pressing play on the system remote, with control signals sent via HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface).
The wireless component comes courtesy of two optional modules. The first is the Panasonic SH-FX60 transceiver which enables you to transmit surround sound audio signals to the rear speakers using the 2.4GHz waveband, while also giving you the ability to enjoy music from a portable music player through the front speakers using the FX60’s specially designed port.
The second wireless component is the Panasonic SH-FX80 which gives you the ability to listen to music – or indeed movies – in a second room thanks to its built-in 180W receiver. The FX80 can also be used standalone by hooking it up to a digital audio player.
The Panasonic SC-HT940 is expected to go on sale in May Stateside for $500 (£284), with the SC-RT50 following one month later at $600 (£342). The optional FX60 and FX80 wireless transceivers go on sale in April at $150 (£85) and $200 (£114) respectively. There’s no word yet on when any of the products are likely to reach the UK.
