VW Concept A: slick, quick and very, very green

4-wheel drive sports coupé meets compact SUV

Most car companies rarely turn their revolutionary visions of the future into fact, but Volkswagen could make an exception for its Concept A BlueMotion compact SUV.

Based on the current Golf platform, this 4-door, 4WD sports coupé is expected to hit sometime in 2009 with, hopefully, most of its features intact.

This is because Volkswagen has adopted today’s rather than tomorrow’s technology for the design, eschewing rearview cameras instead of mirrors for example, and using a dash design based on the Passat.

Indeed one of the few concessions to future technologies is the presence of an eco-friendly TSI engine, powered by compact natural gas (CNC).

The 1.4-litre, 150bhp lump is equipped with both a supercharger and twin turbos which can achieve a maximum top speed of 120mph, while also delivering a miserly fuel consumption of 5kg of natural gas per 100km.

The BlueMotion looks likely to be equipped with Volkswagen’s FSI and turbodiesel units too.
